Beautiful Design Before Attention Grabbers

"Beauty will save the world" Fyodor Dostoevsky

The other day I was thinking, how would our society look if more fashion designers and brands concentrated on creating beautiful and timeless designs rather than putting so much energy at creating something that is cool and ephemeral and when trendy “disruptive” (I truly dislike that word and that trend from a few years ago). There is so much product out there that ends of in waste bins simply because they were invented to be cool for a moment, to shock and disrupt the system. I can think of those odd Gucci collaborations with Disney, or the ugly Balenciaga shoe trend which was so popular, yet, as in the name, so very ugly. Where are those products today? I truly believe their is more integrity at focusing on beauty first. There is more mindfulness at designing objects that will add to the beauty and excellence of a period in time, rather than creating designs for instant attention at all costs. When I think of designers who were able to get attention through shock or provocative ideas, so many greats come to mind who achieved those objectives but never compromised beauty and design. Tom Ford at Gucci and YSL, Franco Moschino, and Martin Margiela were exceptional at getting attention but always put beauty first.
