Should Creative Directors get Royalty Fees?

Should creative directors get royalty fees for their successful products that continue selling once they’ve left the brand they worked for? This question has been on my mind for a while. I’ve actually witnessed many creatives in fashion quite frustrated with a lack of financial recognition for the hero products or volume drivers they’ve created. As we see more luxury brands re-issue old styles and new creative directors “borrowing” from the past, I wonder, who should benefit? For television stars, such as the cast of FRIENDS, big and steady revenue is secured the day their shows go into syndication. Can creative directors also find a way to benefit from creating a product that keeps attracting clients (an audience) and making money? My instinct is yes and creatives will get more business savvy in the future. With the right support teams, they will be better equipped to defend their work, their financial rights, and most importantly their creativity.
